Since we met Peeta, we have learned he is an excellent public speaker. When it comes to Mockingjay, Peeta’s talent comes with a different twist.
When Katniss and Peeta reunite in the third book, Katniss talks about how Peeta made an appearance on the tv with a secret message. It was as if he was waging some sort of battle to get a message out. The mystery was inside Peeta’s mind and what he was trying to convey. Was this because of the torture he went through while captured in the Capitol.
Peeta’s spoken words and Katniss’ strength with archery are their secret weapons. These are the duo’s talents used in order to survive in the Hunger Games and Quarter Quell.
The Capitol was to take away this power from Peeta. They did something called “hijacking.” Hijacking is where they brainwashed him to believing Katniss was evil and erasing all the good memories that were made. When the Capitol finished with Peeta, he lost his ability to gracefully speak and had a mind-set of killing Katniss.
After the two unite, Peeta begins to partially recover. He even made a joke to Katniss, which shocked her.
Regardless if it is Peeta’s old or new personality, he is still one of the most courageous and determined characters in Mockingjay. He even refused to allow them to remove his handcuffs. He asked them not to be removed because it holds himself together. When he feels himself slip, he digs his wrists into them, so the pain will get back be focused.
For Katniss and the other characters, Peeta is an inspiration. He does not want to give up. He continues to fight to feel like his old self again. He even played a game with them asking “real” or “not real.”
Even though Peeta has been turned into a weapon, he is ultimately still a good person. When the group gathers together on a vote about another Hunger Games, he immediately rejects the idea. He went on to voice his opinion and say this is exactly the reason they rebelled.
At the end of the story, Peeta regains the majority of his sanity. He is once again in love and moving on with his life. However, there are still the remains of the damage the Capitol has left.
