Katniss accepted her new position as the rebel in District 13. Her and a few others were taken from the Quarter Quell. The Quarter Quell was from Catching Fire. However, Peeta was not one of these who were extracted. He was still missing and in watched closely under the Capitol’s eyes.
Each day, Katniss still felt as if President Snow haunted her. After much torment, she chose to accept the role as Mockingjay for the rebel side. By accepting this role, she was granted immunity for her friends and authorization to personally end President Snow’s life. Beetee, another Game victor, worked with Katniss closely. She trained Katniss to become a special weapon.
As the role of Mockingjay, Katniss was featured in commercials that represented the rebel side. These clips were called propos. In a propo, she teamed up with her dear friend Gale. They were sent to District two. During their time in District two, they visited a hospital that ended up getting destroyed.
By speaking with the injured, and then seeing the hospital demolished, encouraged Katniss to fight for justice. The rebels gained strength after her decision. This was also influenced by the coded message Peeta sent out to warn the rebels. After Peeta sent out this message, the Capitol released footage of Peeta being tortured.
When Katniss saw the video of Peeta being mistreated, she was devastated. In the video of Peeta, he warned the Capitol would bomb District 13. They did bomb the district. This caused everyone in the Capitol to go deeper into the ground for protection. After the damage was done and the dust had settled, Katniss recorded another propo.
While she videoed the propo for the other Districts and Capitol to see, the rebel team went to rescue Peeta. They were successful and captured Peeta and a few others out of the Capitol. Peeta returned to District 13, where he was severely damaged — physically and mentally. The Capitol “hijacked” (brainwashed) him and Peeta believed Katniss was an enemy. Peeta tried to kill her as soon as the couple reunited.
Katniss needed time to recover from Peeta’s attack. Once she felt better, Katniss took all her power to join the action. She traveled back to District 2 and pondered if attacking the Capitol would be heartlessly or benevolently. Gale suggested they use strategies inhumanely with merciless weapons. During the beginning of this battle, Katniss was shot.
Katniss was required to recoup back at District 13. While recovering, she connected with another victor—Johanna. Johanna was originally introduced in Catching Fire. As she was healing, she also witnessed a wedding between two victors—Finnick and Annie. Katniss became very eager to recover and start fighting again.
Katniss, Finnick and Gale were sent to a special unit. In this unit, they would film during combat, which turned into more propos. Before the trio entered the field, Peeta was assigned to the same unit. Were the commanders looking for some drama? Possibly!
With Peeta in the same unit, Katniss feared for her life. Peeta did improved, however he was still angry with Katniss and hijacked. Boggs warned and agreed with Katniss that she should be very careful around him. Boggs ended up as one of the first casualties. Before he expired, Boggs assigned Katniss commander of that unit.
On what may be a suicide mission, Katniss told everyone her secret mission to murder President Snow. Many of the team members are killed on the journey to the heart of the Capitol. Five members were left, including Katniss, Peeta and Gale as they hone in on the heart of the Capitol. Finally, the three ended up separated through the mass crowds. Within the residents of the Capitol, many people were murdered, including children.
Katniss saw the medical team members, which one was Prim. Prim is Katniss’ little sister. Katniss witnessed her sister get killed and again she is badly injured.
The rebels gained control of the Capitol. They captured President Snow. Katniss went face-to-face with the imprisoned President Snow. President Snow told Katniss she was blaming the wrong person. She should have focused on President Coin (rebels side) for all the attacks and Prim’s death.
Katniss began to question everything and possibly believe President Snow could be correct. It seemed that the rebels staged the final attack. In addition, the inhumane weapon Gale created could have been the one that killed Prim. Katniss could never forgive him now.
Before Snow’s execution, there was a meeting with President Coin and the remaining Hunger Games victors. They voted if the rebel government should continue the Hunger Games again. This way the citizens of the Capitol could be punished for what they did to the districts. Katniss was left to vote and she agrees—the Hunger Games will begin again. Next, we headed to Snow’s execution.
Katniss had originally requested to be the one who murders President Snow. She used her infamous bow and arrow to end the life of the President. Katniss shoots President Coin instead. President Snow was sick and died anyway. Katniss then had a nervous breakdown.
As time continued on, she remained to live in a fog. She went through a trial for the murder of President Coin, where she was acquitted. They sent her back to the ruined District 12. She moved there with Haymitch and Peeta. Gale moved to another district as a continuing soldier.
Katniss eventually accepted the grievance of her sister and the other who had died during the war. She started to rebuild her life with Peeta. They formed a romantic relationship and have children.
